Even though I am free of the demands and expectations of everyone, I have voluntarily become a servant to any and all in order to reach a wide range of people: religious, nonreligious, meticulous moralists, loose-living immoralists, the defeated, the demoralizedâ€”whoever. I didn't take on their way of life. I kept my bearings in Christâ€”but I entered their world and tried to experience things from their point of view. I've become just about every sort of servant there is in my attempts to lead those I meet into a God-saved life. I did all this because of the Message. â€œFor I know the plans I have for you,&quot; declares the LORD, &quot;plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.â€ Jeremiah 29:11 

Three reasons why God messes up your plans:

1. God wants to get your attention
â€œBut my people would not listen to me . . .â€ Psalm 81:11 (NIV)
There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.  Proverbs 16:25 (NIV)


2. God has a different plan for your life
â€œI know what I'm doing. I have it all planned outâ€”plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.â€ Jeremiah 29:11 (Message paraphrase)

i.	Godâ€™s plan is BIGGER than our plan
ii.	Godâ€™s plan is GREATER than our plan
iii.	Godâ€™s plan is more REWARDING than any other plan in life

â€œNo eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.â€ 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NLT)


3.  God wants you to trust him
And without faith it is impossible to please God.  Hebrews 11:6a (NIV)
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28 (NIV)

i.	God has a plan and purpose for your life
ii.	God will be with you no matter what you face
iii.	Trusting God is the most relaxed, rational, sane way to live

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)
The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever . Psalm 138:8 (NIV)

. . . he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair.  Isaiah 61:3 (NLT)

I. When we give God our WORRY, God gives us his PEACE 
â€œTherefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.â€  Matthew 6:34 (NIV)

â€œCast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.â€  1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)
â€œI am leaving you with a gift - peace of mind and heart!  And the peace I give isnâ€™t fragile like the peace the world gives.  So donâ€™t be troubled or afraid.â€  John 14:27 (TLB)
How?				
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

II. When we give God our HURTS, God gives us his HEALING 
â€œFrom a sea of troubles I call out to You, Lord.â€  Psalm 130:1 (CEV) 

â€œHe has sent me to heal the brokenhearted.â€  Isaiah 61:1 (NKJV)

â€œThe Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble.  He cares for those who trust in Him.â€  Nahum 1:7 (NIV) 
(Mary said)  â€œHe cares for me, His humble servant.â€  Luke 1:48 (CEV) 

 How?				
â€œPraise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.â€  2 Corinthians 1:4 (NIV)

III. When we give God our GRIEF, God gives us his JOY 
â€œYou have turned my mourning into joyful dancing.  You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy.â€  Psalm 30:11 (NLT) 
 â€œ. . . weeping may remain for a night,  but rejoicing comes in the morning..â€  Psalm 30:5 (NIV)
â€œYou will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.â€  John 16:20b (NIV)
 
How?				

â€œBut the angel said to them, â€˜Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.â€™â€  Luke 2:10-11 (NIV)

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.  And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.  As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.  I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.  For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.  For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to doâ€”this I keep on doing.  Romans 7:15-19

Wrapping Paper is Not the Giftâ€”Holiness is the Gift!
. . . we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.  Hebrews 10:10  
And we . . .  are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.  2 Corinthians 3:18  

Misunderstanding Messy Gift Wrapping
â€¢	Spiritual Apathy
â€¢	Spiritual Performance
	â€œThe teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.  So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.â€  Matthew 23:2-3
	â€œWoe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.  In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.â€  Matthew 23:27-28

Unwrapping the Beautiful Mess

Three Guardrails to Keep You on the Mountain of Joy

1. RESIST legalistic attitudes (attitude determines altitude)
Watch out for those dogs, those men who do evil, those mutilators of the flesh. For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh. Philippians 3:2-3

Guardrail: LIVE EACH DAY BY GRACE
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godâ€” not by works, so that no one can boast.  Ephesians 2:8-9

2. REEVALUATE your priorities
But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ . . .  Philippians 3:7-8

Guardrail: KEEP YOUR PRIORITIES IN PERSPECTIVE
&quot;Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.&quot;  Luke 12:15

3. REFOCUS your ambitions
I want to KNOW Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death . . . Philippians 3:10
For my determined purpose is that I may KNOW Him that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly . . . (amplified version)

5 PATHS TO LOG REMOVAL
1.	Call a Time Out.

**â€œMy dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.â€  James 1:19-20
**â€œGod opposes the proud  but gives grace to the humble.&quot; James 4:6
2.	Cry out to God.

**â€œIf any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.â€ James 1:5 
**â€œGive thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.â€   1 Thessalonians 5:18 
3.	Commit to Forgiving Your Mate.

**â€œGet rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of malicious behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.â€   Ephesians 4:31-32 
4.	Choose a different Reaction.
**James 1:21-25 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing itâ€”he will be blessed in what he does.
5.	Create Judgment Free Zones.

The WRONG Questions: 
Will my needs get met? Whatâ€™s in it for me?  Will I be happy? 

The RIGHT Question: 
Am I demonstrating the image and character of Jesus Christ?

1.	Promise your mate that you will not expect them to meet all of your needs. 
â€œMy God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.â€ Philippians 4:19 

2.	Promise your mate that you will learn to love God â€œwith all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strengthâ€ Mark 12:30. 

3.	Promise your mate that you will look to God alone to charge your battery to full. 
(vs. 16-19 on screen) â€œNow to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within usâ€¦â€ Eph.3:16-20

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.  And be thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another . . And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.â€  Colossians 3:15-17 

4.	Promise your mate that you will take 100% responsibility for your journey.
â€œIt is not good for the man to be alone,â€ he said. â€œI will make a helper suitable for himâ€ Genesis 2:18 

â€œThe woman you put here with meâ€”she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate itâ€ Genesis 3:12 

5.	Promise your mate that you will assist him or her on their journey.
â€œconformed to the likeness of his Sonâ€ Romans 8:29 

â€œthe man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamedâ€ Genesis 2:25 

â€œThis is a profound mysteryâ€”but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.â€ Ephesians 5:32-33

KEY #1 - SAFETY
Suspend JUDGMENT 
&quot;Don't pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults--unless, of course, you want the same treatment. 2That critical spirit has a way of boomeranging. 3It's easy to see a smudge on your neighbor's face and be oblivious to the ugly sneer on your own. 4Do you have the nerve to say, &quot;Let me wash your face for you,' when your own face is distorted by contempt? 5It's this whole traveling road-show mentality all over again, playing a holier-than-thou part instead of just living your part.
